Programs

MAEAP Environmental Education
MAEAP provides information and assessment tools for pesticide and nitrogen fertilizer users which help them identify risks to groundwater and to coordinate local, state, and federal resources to help individuals reduce those risks. The main focus of this voluntary program is to assist producers in becoming verified in the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP).

Our Environmental Education Coordinator works with schools, service groups, and the community to provide tools, events, and programs about how natural environments function and how we can live sustainably within those environments.

Rice Creek Floodplain Reconnection Project Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP)
This project will address four high priority sites to reduce sedimentation from stream bank erosion, reduce storm water peak flow events, improve fishery/aquatic life habitat, reduce downstream flooding and the need for dredging, and help restore and protect the natural hydrologic regime of Rice Creek, as identified in the Watershed Management Plan. Click here to see the Rice Creek Watershed Management Plan.

AWEP is a component of the EQIP Farm Bill program administered by USDA-NRCS, targeted to producers in the Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Black River watersheds. AWEP promotes ground and surface water conservation and improves water quality. For more information, click here or call us at (269) 781-4867, x5.

Property Acquisition and Management Kalamazoo River Heritage Water Trail

Calhoun Conservation District currently owns and manages six parcels of land throughout Calhoun County, ranging in size from 4.5 acres to 325 acres, for a total of 534.3 acres. These parcels are managed for wildlife habitat and public enjoyment. Many parcels have been donated to us from landowners interested in "leaving their legacy." Contact Tracy Bronson at (269) 781-4867, extension 5 for more information.

Heritage water trails are routes on navigable waterways such as rivers, lakes, and canals designed and implemented to foster an interactive historical education experience. Historical markers posted on bridge crossing highlight historic events or themes related to the waterway. A companion guide provides a more detailed presentation of the historic material in addition to acting as a more conventional water trail guide with maps, put-in points, take-out points, rest stop locations, paddling conditions, etc. Check out the Kalamazoo River Heritage Water Trail!
